In the wake of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the decision was made to seismically strengthen the highrise, 1960's era Oakland Police Administration Building, to a level permitting its continuing to function after the next significant shake.
A portion of this work involved installation of large concrete shear walls along the short ends of the structure. One of these ends fronts Broadway, Oakland's central boulevard.
To preserve a measure of the building's civic quality, despite being limited to one small door facing Broadway, Ace developed a new base for the building incorporating generous, large-scale openings, which are apparent rather than real. Set between these openings is new backlit signage, in the form of an over-sized police officer's badge.
